Navigating the Search Process: Details

  • Prospects - This is a 2-way street. We search out leaders who we want to interest in the position. And, we are contacted by those who want to explore this opportunity. A series of conversations take place all centered around the issue of “fit”. If the fit is there, we encourage you to be a candidate and to submit your papers.
  • Candidates - We review the materials submitted by all of the candidates. We’ll provide you with feedback on them. Each member of the Search Committee receives a notebook binder containing qualified candidates’ materials.
  • Semi-Finalists - The Search Committee meets as a group to discuss the candidates and select semi-finalists. The number chosen varies with each school.
  • Semi-Finalists are invited to tour the school and interview with the Search Committee. If confidentiality is not an issue, committee members may have made initial calls to someone who knows you or your school. Otherwise, your candidacy is confidential at this point.
  • During the search process, the school sends you an assortment of materials. The school pays for your travel expenses and we advise you where to send your receipts.
  • Finalists - After the semi-finalists’ interviews, the committee meets to discuss their views and select finalists. We recommend no fewer than three (3) finalists.
  • Finalists and their spouses are invited back for a multi-day visit at the school.
  • At this time, you have an opportunity to visit classes and to meet individually and in forums with students, faculty, parents, administrators, staff, board members, and alumni/ae.
  • Your spouse also has a chance to visit the school, tour the surrounding area, and receive information pertaining to specific interests and concerns.
  • The visit concludes with an exit interview with members of the Search Committee.
  • The committee conducts complete reference checks on you. Some committees do this prior to your visit; others, during and after your visit. This means that, at this time, your candidacy is no longer confidential. The people who have written letters of recommendation and the people you have listed are called. They are also asked for the names of other people to call, not on your list. Additionally, you are asked by us to register for a check on your credit, motor vehicle, criminal, and education history.
  • Following the finalists’ visits, the committee meets to decide upon the nominee. The final choice is presented at the next full board meeting.
